Neighbourhood Garage Sale

Submitted by NicK on April 15, 2008 - 5:38pm. ::

Local real estate agent Gary Kuppers just stopped by our house to tell us about a 'Neighbourhood Garage Sale Day' on May 10/08 from 9am-3pm in Clover Valley Station & Heartland. He has taken care of the advertising in the local papers and in his newsletter. He also said that he has large signage to post on the main streets. We were planning on having a yard sale a couple of weeks later in May but we will definately be taking advantage of this day instead since the turn-out should be on a significantly larger scale.

Living near the park

Submitted by Francesca on March 23, 2008 - 2:39pm. ::

Hello,

We're considering moving into a house near Hillcrest park. It is on the far end, with two sides backing directly onto the field. We find it appealing for many reasons, but are concerned about some of the trouble that might come along with being so close.

 We would really appreciate the perspective of nighbours around the park. Are there issues with vandalism, break-ins, teens hanging around (in a bad way I mean)? The neighbourhood looks wonderful, but we are worried about being so exposed. Any insight on this would be great.

The fact that there is a community forum like this, is a testiment to the nature of the nighbourhood, we just don't want any nasty surprises like a broken car window or graffiti on the fence!

New Garbage/Recycling program in 2008

Submitted by NicK on December 18, 2007 - 9:15pm. ::

I just checked out the new waste/recycling program that Surrey will be using in 2008. It looks like our new pick up day will be Fridays and they have a new program for yard waste as well. Each resident will be given decals to put on re-usable garbage cans for their yard waste (free of charge, addition decals are also free) or they will need to place their yard waste in Kraft paper bags (available for purchase).

Check it out on the city's website at www.surrey.ca and click on Living in Surrey. it will be the last option in the pull down box.

Site Update

Submitted by toddz on October 9, 2007 - 12:02pm. ::

Sorry... I've been a bit busy lately and haven't had a chance to post any content to this site.

Since I see there hasn't been much traffic lately, I'm wondering what everyone's opinion is on this site and how we could increase traffic to it.

Any thoughts and/or opinions?

Un Leashed Dogs in the Field

Submitted by JandB on August 9, 2007 - 9:31pm. ::

We decided to post this topic because this is now getting out of hand in our neighbourhood. It is great to see the people of our community making use of our beautiful sports field, but there are a number of people that are taking advantage of things. The park clearly has signs posted that all dogs must be leashed at all times. Yet on any given evening you can see between 5-15 owners and thier dogs in the park off leash. While I give them credit as we have yet to see any dog droppings on the field, they are still breaking the rules. Twice this week as we were out with our dog (on her leash) we have had dogs approach and then start to bite at our dog. I know owners think that their dog is a good animal and behaves well so why should they have to have their dog on the leash. What they are forgetting is then when your dog approaches another dog that is on the leash that dog can feel a threat and react. It is not fair to the dogs or the responsible owners that are following the rules.

Car thieves strike again!

Submitted by fitzy17 on August 4, 2007 - 8:54am. ::

Just a heads up our Mazda was hit again.   A friendly neighbor driving through at 8:30 am this morning rang our doorbell to advise us we had a huge dent in the side and that the door was ajar.  Again, nothing much of value, our cell phone charger, that's about it.

The problem with having a Mazda 3 is that thieves only have to hit the door (causing a dent) in the correct spot to pop the locks.  A Mazda fault.   We have the choice to have Mazda put reinforced steel plates in the door.  Problem with that is that the thieves will continue to attempt the door without any success, and instead of having one dent we will have several.  Luckily this time my husband was able to knock it back out.

Parking near the Park

Submitted by bev on July 28, 2007 - 1:45am. ::

I spoke with the city today about the parking near the new fields.  I was told they are trying to secure parking at the school.  I believe that more people will park on the street where it is closer, and they can see the park.  I was told that we need to submit emails to them to try and get residents only parking, or something that would keep the masses off the roads near us.  I believe it is a saftey issue, booth for all our own children, and our vehicles.  With all the car breakins and vandelism it seems obvious that we would want to be able to see our cars parked near our homes, which is unlikely if there are games and practices going on.  And I think we will see more damage to our cars with others trying to park in our neibourhood.  Here is the email address if you share my concerns -  traffic@surrey.ca

Have you seen the new back stop?  It is huge, looks like the dugout is about 100 feet from the batting area.  I guess we should be expecting major leaguers!

Car break ins continued... and a new bylaw?

Submitted by toddz on July 9, 2007 - 10:56am. ::

Looks like we were next in line.  A week ago we had the back window of our van smashed out at 4:30am.

They didn't take anything - just wanted to smash something I
guess.  Given the alarm, I was out there in seconds and didn't see
anyone.

We  have also had the police in front of Hillcrest park on each of the last three weekends for different issues.

Interestingly, on Saturday night we overheard the police speaking to a group of kids at around 10:00pm .  Apparently the City of Surrey has a new bylaw which prohibits people from loitering in the park after dark.  Those breaking the bylaw will receive a $60 fine (if I heard correctly).  Those with alcohol will receive a $198 dollar fine with other consequences depending on age/whether they have a drivers license.  I think I heard that also applies to the school grounds.

Car break-ins on the rise in the neighbourhood!

Submitted by fitzy17 on June 18, 2007 - 2:51pm. ::

FYI - our neighbours vehicle has been broken into twice in the past month, our car once so far, and the neighbours in the alley behind us have had thier entire cul-de-sac hit within the last 3 months.

So pass the word on and keep your eyes and ears open.....let's catch these weasles.
